| Departments and Positions at MBCR |
| The Engineering
Department is responsible for the maintenance and
repair of track,
communications, signals and other infrastructure including the
stations, bridges
and buildings on the system. |
| The Mechanical Department is
responsible for the maintenance and repair of the rail,
fleet including 393 coaches and 83 locomotives. The work
involves compliance with various regulatory agencies such as
the Federal Railroad Administration, the American Public
Transportation Association, and the Occupational Safety &
Health Administration. The maintenance and repairs are
performed at three major facilities located in Somerville,
South Boston, and Readville, Massachusetts. In addition,
inspections and maintenance are performed at ten layover
points within the system. |
| The Customer
Service Department oversees all passenger relations
issues. It is the responsibility of all
employees at MBCR to exceed the customer expectations everyday. The key roles in this
department include Ticket Agents, Station Announcers and
Information and Lost and Found Agents. The Customer
Service Agent's role is to investigate customer feedback and
interface daily with our customers and employees to understand
how we can improve the train service we provide to our
passengers. Customer Service staff work throughout the
network, but are most often based at one of the three terminal
stations in Boston, North Station, South Station and Back Bay
Station. |
| The
Transportation Department is responsible for the safe and
reliable passage of customers. This department oversees
Conductors, Assistant Conductors, Locomotive Engineers and Train Dispatchers.
The Transportation Department staff work in 76 communities
across the eastern part of the State and into Providence, Rhode
Island. |

| Maintain MBTA properties and commuter rail
stations within
the Bridge and Building Department. |

Cleaner |
| Perform cleaning of Commuter Rail Passenger coaches |
| Car
Inspector |
| Responsible for inspection, test and
repair of railroad cars and handling of all derailments in
accordance with regulations. |
| Customer Service
Ambassadors |
| Provide exceptional customer service in one or more of the
following capacities: ticket agent, information clerk, remittance clerk, lost and found agent, or
cashier. |
| Work Equipment
Mechanic |
| Mechanic/repairman for maintenance, repair and overhaul of
railroad support equipment for the Engineering
Department. |
| Laborer |
| Perform general labor duties and cleanup work within and
around the mechanical maintenance facilities. |
| Locomotive
Engineer |
| Responsible for the safe operation of locomotives and
trains in compliance with regulations to transport
passengers and equipment safely and efficiently during varying
work hours within a 24/7 environment and in all weather
conditions. |
| Machinist |
| A Machinist services, inspects, tests, maintains and
repairs commuter rail train equipment. |
| Mechanical
Foreman |
| A Mechanical Foreman is responsible for directing the
service, inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of
coaches and/or locomotives. |
| Sheetmetal
Worker/Pipefitter |
| Responsible for the inspection and repair of piping,
hoses, and general sheet metal work on the Commuter Rail
locomotives and coaches. |
| Signalman/Signal
Maintainer |
| Responsible for the maintenance and construction of signal
systems for the Communication and Signal Department. |
| Track
Laborer |
| Responsible for the track and right of way
including all aspects of its maintenance and repair. |
| Train
Dispatcher |
| Supervise the safe and efficient movement of trains and
other on-track equipment over designated portions of the
railroad. |
